Post date: 14-Jan-2015 12:21:29

'Lock-up your daughters' mantra becomes 'Steering wheel lock-up your new car' or else...

The motor industry is demanding tighter control and even licencing in a bid to stop thieves using easily accessible security equipment to steal new cars more easily that have keyless ignition fitted.

A spokesman from the SMMT said: "We need better safeguards within the regulatory framework to make sure this equipment does not fall into unlawful hands and, if it does, that the law provides severe penalties to act as an effective deterrent."

Keyless ignition may have its convienance, at a cost, but this is making your expensive new car purchased far more vulnerable to easier theft. To the point that car insurers are now advising that with such cars you should put a high quality steering lock onto your wheel which is Thatcham approved. Be it your £17,000 Golf to your £80,000 Range Rover or more, if it is keyless use a robust high quality steering wheel lock within your car to protect yourself from theft and all the grieve that comes with it until this issue is got on top of. If you use a key you can also benefit if you wish. The badge on your car offers you no greater protection but may well attract them to you as an easier target to steal from.

No doubt such cars with this entry may well soon have their insurance group raised if such targeted theft of these keyless cars continues.

NB: I have always used 'Disc Lock' on our cars which covers the whole wheel in a steel case, this has passed home office tests of attacks with flying colours over many, many years and always being top rated. There are a few Thatcham approved steering wheel locks to select from.
