NI 16 - Disqualified drivers face fine of only £284

Police minister Mike Penning revealed under questioning in the House of Commons that motorists in 2013 caught driving after being disqualified were given an average fine of only £284! The maximum fine is £5,000 so illegal drivers are paying just 5% of that.

A total of 7,619 drivers went to court for this offence with 7,083 found guilty. Only 25% of those convicted were jailed, however for those imprisoned the average jail term was 3.2 months. Nearly 2,500 served community sentences with a further 1,700 given suspended sentences for their crimes.

Is this too soft? What message does it send out to those in the know who think due to circumstances or whatever reason that they will give it a go to avoid paying insurance. If you are doing that will you then perhaps also consider avoiding costs of servicing and MOT? With these further increased dangers that any of these deliberate actions then bring onto our roads and highways who will pay the consequences and will it be with anybody's life?
